BMW F 700 GS unveiled

BMW has revealed the F 700 GS, a replacement for the F 650 GS.

Like its predecessor, the new arrival is powered by a parallel twin-cylinder engine that features an additional connecting rod to help keep the vibrations down. Despite the ‘700’ label, its capacity actually remains at 798 cc, although power is up a tad from the F 650’s 70 bhp (52 kW / 71 PS) to 74 bhp (55 kW / 75 PS).

In terms of specification, the big news is that anti-lock brakes will come as standard and the front wheel now gets twin discs to make the most of the system. Those upgrades are in line with BMW’s just-announced ‘Safety 360°’ philosophy, which will see all of the firm’s 2013 model year bikes fitted with ABS.

Among the various options available are Automatic Stability Control and Electronic Suspension Adjustment, both unique items for this market segment. ASC is a traction control system that minimises wheel-spin when accelerating, while ESA allows the rider to choose between Comfort, Normal and Sport modes for the rear damper.

Although the frame and swing-arm are unaltered, restyled bodywork gives the F 700 GS a more purposeful look. Other changes include new compact handlebar switch units, a redesigned windscreen and a smoked grey finish for the indicators and rear light. Buyers will be able to choose from Ostra Grey, Red Apple or Glacier Silver paint finishes, all of which are metallic.

Prices for the 2013 BMW F 700 GS have yet to be confirmed.
