Fuso Canter E-Cell trials begin in Europe

Daimler subsidiary Fuso has released eight examples of its electric-powered Canter E-Cell to customers in Portugal. A mix of municipal, local delivery and postal operators will be running the trucks for a year to see how they cope in real-world conditions.

Each prototype being evaluated has a 3,400 mm (11’ 2”) wheelbase, a single cab and either a box or platform body. With a gross vehicle weight of 6.0 tonnes, maximum payload is around half that figure.

The Canter E-Cell’s electric motor develops 147 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS) with 650 Nm (479 lb/ft) of torque and it’s connected to a single-speed transmission. Top speed is limited to 56 mph (90 km/h), which should be more than sufficient for most urban applications.

Users are probably going to be more concerned with range rather than performance, though.

Fuso has fitted a 48.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that’s reckoned to offer a driving distance of over 60 miles (100 kilometres). Once depleted, recharging takes about seven hours using a 230-volt supply, but that time can be reduced to one hour by plugging into a rapid-charge facility instead.

The European-specification Canter E-Cell is manufactured at Fuso’s plant in Tramagal, Portugal.
