2015 BMW S 1000 XR unveiled

With its upright riding position, wide handlebars, high ground clearance and four-cylinder engine, the BMW S 1000 XR is essentially a cross between the R 1200 GS and S 1000 RR. Such a combination should make the new arrival an appealing all-rounder that’s equally suited to touring or more rapid use.

Like the S 1000 RR, the S 1000 XR is powered by a 999 cc motor which is connected to a chain-drive system via a six-speed transmission. A retune sees output reduced from 196 bhp (146 kW / 199 PS) to 157 bhp (118 kW / 160 PS), but crucially a peak torque figure of 112 Nm (83 lb/ft) is virtually identical.

The chassis set-up comprises an aluminium perimeter frame with a conventional upside-down front fork and double-sided rear swingarm. Electronic suspension adjustment will be on the options list.

Along with anti-lock brakes, the bike’s standard equipment includes traction control and a choice of ‘Road’ or ‘Rain’ riding modes.

Although a seat height of 840 mm (33.1”) might be off-putting to some shorter riders, the S 1000 XR weighs a reasonable 228 kg (502 lbs) fully fuelled. BMW has yet to announce a UK price.
