BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer launched

In creating the 2 Series Gran Tourer, BMW has followed a fairly simple process: take a 2 Series Active Tourer, give its wheelbase a slight stretch, add some extra bodywork at the rear and then make the roofline a few centimetres higher.

As a result, the Gran Tourer measures 4,556 mm (14’ 11”) from bumper to bumper, thereby making the new arrival 214 mm (8”) longer than an Active Tourer.

The benefits of that increase can be seen in the back. With the 40:20:40-split rear seats upright, luggage capacity ranges from 645 to 805 litres thanks to their sliding function. Fold them down and cargo space grows to 1,905 litres.

Alternatively, if carrying people is the priority, then a third row of seats can be deployed. This has room for a further two (probably quite small) passengers.

In the UK, the 2 Series Gran Tourer is being offered in SE, Sport, Luxury and M Sport guises. Each comes as standard with rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, Bluetooth and that third row of seats.

The engine line-up comprises five petrol and diesel units, all of which are turbocharged:

  • 218i - 1,499 cc 3-cylinder petrol, 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS), front-wheel drive.

  • 220i - 1,998 cc 4-cylinder petrol, 189 bhp (141 kW / 192 PS), front-wheel drive.

  • 216d - 1,496 cc 3-cylinder diesel, 114 bhp (85 kW / 116 PS), front-wheel drive.

  • 218d - 1,995 cc 4-cylinder diesel, 147 bhp (110 kW / 150 PS), front-wheel drive.

  • 220d xDrive - 1,995 cc 4-cylinder diesel, 187 bhp (140 kW / 190 PS), all-wheel drive.

Prices start from £24,175.
