2016 Cadillac CT6 first view

Cadillac's CT6 luxury saloon – which has just been unveiled at the New York International Auto Show – is an all-new flagship model for the brand.

It's certainly large. With an overall length of 5,182 mm (17’ 0”), the CT6 is pitched midway between the standard and long-wheelbase versions of BMW's 7 Series. Curiously, Cadillac is adamant that the CT6 is not a replacement for the existing XTS, even though the latter is only 51 mm (2”) shorter.

But then the CT6 is being marketed as a technologically advanced vehicle built according to the latest manufacturing techniques.

For example, its bodyshell is based on GM's latest Omega architecture. This makes extensive use of aluminium for strength and lightness, resulting in an estimated kerb weight of less than 1,700 kg (3,747 lbs). By comparison, the XTS tips the scales at 1,877 kg (4,138 lbs) in front-wheel drive guise.

Three powertrains are being offered that all feature an eight-speed automatic transmission:

  • 265 bhp (198 kW / 269 PS) 2.0 litre turbocharged I4, rear-wheel drive

  • 335 bhp (250 kW / 339 PS) 3.6 litre normally-aspirated V6, all-wheel drive

  • 400 bhp (298 kW / 405 PS) 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6, all-wheel drive

For a more dynamic experience an available Active Chassis System will add active rear steering and Magnetic Ride Control continuously-variable damping.

Of course, plenty of buyers in this segment will be more interested in comfort rather than performance – and they shouldn't be disappointed. As well as a 34-speaker Bose audio system, the CT6's specification includes seat heating and massage, leather upholstery, reclining rear seats and quad-zone climate control.

Numerous clever devices abound too, many of which are controlled via a 10.2” high-definition touchscreen and its associated console-mounted touchpad. A 360° camera set-up helps to eliminate blind spots, the rear-view mirror incorporates a video monitor to remove obstructions and the parking assist function boasts automatic braking.

CT6 production is due to begin in Detroit at the end of 2015. Cadillac says it will be coming to Europe next year, however prices have yet to be announced.
