2016 Porsche 911 GT3 R racer unveiled

Improved aerodynamics, better handling and reduced fuel consumption are promised by Porsche's new 911 GT3 R. This latest 911 race car, which will be delivered to teams from the end of this year, is based on the road-going GT3 RS.

Of course, the transition from showroom model has involved plenty of changes. For example, the body features carbon fibre reinforced plastic panels and polycarbonate glazing. Such careful material selection has contributed to an overall weight of just 1,220 kg (2,690 lbs).

Furthermore, the wheelbase has been stretched by 8.3 cm (3.3”) to give enhanced balance and stability, there's a massive rear wing and the distinctive 'double-bubble' roof incorporates an escape hatch that's larger than before.

Power is provided by a normally-aspirated, 4.0 litre, six-cylinder, direct injection boxer engine which is now cooled by a single centrally-mounted radiator. Its output of over 493 bhp (368 kW / 500 PS) is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential transmission.

Among the other upgrades are a slightly larger fuel cell and a more protective driver's seat. Modifications to the anti-lock system should give more braking feel, too.

The 911 GT3 R costs €429,000 plus taxes (around £312,300 or US$491,100 at current exchange rates). Porsche is already accepting orders.
