2016 Kia Sportage interior revealed

A few days ago, several exterior shots of Kia’s all-new fourth-generation Sportage emerged. Now the first images showing the interior have been released.

They depict a cabin that’s slightly larger than the old model’s, thanks primarily to a wheelbase which has grown by 30 mm (1.2”) to 2,670 mm (8’ 9”). There’s added headroom and legroom for both front and rear occupants, for example, plus luggage capacity is up from 465 litres to 503 litres.

Improved refinement is also claimed. Some of the contributing factors are a stronger bodyshell, modified drivetrain mounts, better soundproofing and redesigned seats with stiffer high-tensile steel frames that isolate vibrations.

The Sportage’s ride and handling have also received attention. Indeed, to take advantage of the enhancements, a sporty GT Line variant will be part of the line-up. It features a tauter suspension set-up, 19” alloy wheels and more responsive rack-mounted electric power steering.

Available equipment includes heating for the front and rear seats, power-adjustable front seats and a panoramic sunroof. Technology certainly isn’t lacking, as customers could order a wireless charger, a rear-view parking camera and either a 7” or an 8” colour touchscreen to control navigation and infotainment functions.

Also being offered are numerous safety systems. Among them are blind spot detection with lane change assist, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning and radar-controlled autonomous emergency braking.

Kia has confirmed a range of five engines:

  • 1.6 litre GDI petrol - 130 bhp (97 kW / 132 PS)

  • 1.6 litre T-GDI turbo petrol - 174 bhp (130 kW / 177 PS)

  • 1.7 litre CRDi turbo diesel - 113 bhp (84 kW / 115 PS)

  • 2.0 litre R turbo diesel - 134 bhp (100 kW / 136 PS)

  • 2.0 litre R turbo diesel - 181 bhp (135 kW / 184 PS)

Variously available with either front- or all-wheel drive, they come with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard. The T-GDI unit can be mated with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch transmission instead, while a conventional automatic transmission is the alternative for the others.

The 2016 Sportage, which will be built in Slovakia, is set to debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show later this month.
