Cadillac ELR range-extender updated for 2016

Apart from its new-style Cadillac grille, the 2016 ELR looks virtually identical to the current model. However, beneath the skin there have been some important mechanical upgrades.

They centre on the range-extender powertrain. While the four-cylinder 1.4 litre petrol engine still develops 84 bhp (63 kW / 85 PS), peak output from the electric motor has risen from 181 bhp (135 kW / 183 PS) to 233 bhp (174 kW / 236 PS).

Thanks to that increase and a modified Sport mode the 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time drops from 7.9 to 6.4 seconds. The ELR’s top speed is 106 mph (170 km/h), or 130 mph (209 km/h) with the optional Performance Package (which includes high-grip summer-only tyres and better brakes).

Another small enhancement sees the lithium-ion battery pack’s capacity grow from 16.5 kWh to 17.1 kWh. As a result, pure electric range becomes around 39 miles (63 kilometres) instead of the previous 35 miles (56 kilometres).

To complement the extra performance, attention has also been paid to the chassis set-up. Helping to give more feel are stiffer bushes, altered front spring rates, recalibrated dampers and more responsive steering.

In the United States, prices for the 2016 Cadillac ELR start from $58,495 after applying a federal tax credit.
